Milken Institute Global Conference

April 27-30, 2014

Los Angeles, CA

Each spring, the Milken Institute brings many of the world’s most powerful people to Los Angeles on a mission to address the biggest challenges of our time. Armed with provocative opinions and fresh insights, they do much more than just debate the issues. They help move policy toward realistic solutions.

This spring Tom Stewart, Executive Director for the National Center for the Middle Market, served as a moderator for the panel "Debating Online Higher Education: Sebastian Thrun and Niall Ferguson."

Also of interest to the mid-market was a panel discussion on access to capital.

Highlights include:

  • middle market companies struggle with financing where markets are less transparent and less liquid
  • debt investors tend to look for the half-empty glass or what might go wrong whereas equity investors look for half-full glasses or what might go right
  • the importance of telling your story, not just showing the numbers
